Help preserve the Reading Large house at 119 Main Street, an historic property in Flemington, NJ. The Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce Foundation is seeking donations to help maintain the historic integrity of the building and complete renovations suspended during the pandemic. Donations are tax deductible and will help maintain a remarkable building and its history where the law offices located at the Reading Large House were used by the prosecution during the infamous Trial of the Century.
The Reading Large house is an 1847 Mahlon Fisher-designed Greek revival mansion. The house with iconic columns and other distinctive decorative features both interior and exterior is the most elaborate of all the structures designed by Mahlon Fisher in Flemington. The property was placed by the Department of the Interior on the National Historic Registry of Historic Buildings in 1937. The Reading Large house has also made the list of endangered properties here in Hunterdon County published by the Hunterdon County Cultural and Heritage Commission.
The Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce Foundation is a 501(C) 3 non-profit formed in January 2014 to promote, support and fund initiatives that enhance opportunities for leadership, education, economic and workforce development in Hunterdon County. The Foundation purchased and renovated 119 Main Street, to house the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce and Foundation offices and to establish the Center for Business and Entrepreneurship in the building’s annex for education and training programs.
