2025 Hunterdon County Business Award for Tourism - Black River Railroad Historical Trust

2025 Hunterdon County Business Award for Tourism - Black River Railroad Historical Trust
Each year, the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize organizations whose work makes a meaningful impact on our community—and this year’s Hunterdon County Business Award for Tourism recipient does exactly that.
Please join us in congratulating the Black River Railroad Historical Trust!
The Black River Railroad Historical Trust—known to many as BRRHT—is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization made up entirely of dedicated volunteers. Their mission speaks volumes:
“The Black River Railroad Historical Trust is an organization of volunteers with a passion for railroading and local history. We welcome families, railfans, and the general public aboard our trains to enjoy educational experiences and themed events at our historic railroad facilities. Through training and mentorship, we pass on the knowledge and skills of railroad operations and preservation to new volunteers. Together, we are devoted to continued sustainable growth of our membership, public programs, and preservation activities.”
In pursuit of that mission, BRRHT operates seasonal passenger excursions and themed events on the Black River & Western Railroad—often partnering with local businesses like Old York Cellars, Five Birds Farm, and Everitt Farms. Since the early 2000s, they have grown their patronage each year—aside from the unavoidable disruption in 2020—bringing thousands of tourists to Hunterdon County. And they’ve done this while relying almost entirely on volunteer efforts and train ticket revenue.
Their impact on our tourism economy and local partnerships is truly inspiring. But they aren’t stopping there. BRRHT is currently focused on exciting infrastructure projects—like rebuilding the Ringoes Station platform, repairing and repainting the historic station itself, replacing wheels on one of their coaches, and returning the beloved steam locomotive #60 to service. They’re also expanding their capacity with the procurement of a new coach, all in service of preserving Hunterdon County's rich railroad history for generations to come.
Through dedication, community collaboration, and a deep love for history and education, the Black River Railroad Historical Trust has created something truly special—an experience that keeps people coming back to Hunterdon County year after year.
On behalf of the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce, we are proud to present the 2025 Hunterdon County Business Award for Tourism to the Black River Railroad Historical Trust. Congratulations, and thank you for all you do!
